VIDEOS THAT ROCK

Using no traditional animation whatsoever, “Blankest Year” shows a white silhouette dancing across apartment buildings, trees, highways and fences to reach his final destination. Directors Kristian Davidek and Verena Soltiz created the effect by recording a real person in studio, walking, skating, climbing, running and surfing, then projecting the images from the back of a moving truck onto the surfaces of the city itself.

With only two weeks to complete a video that complemented the “lost classic vibe” of Dungen’s hazy folk-psych composition, English collective zeroh looked through its archive for suitable images. They came up with a 3-D set of peacocks, hummingbirds and exotic plants, all hand-drawn, vectorized and constructed, through which the camera whizzes on a sepia-tinted trip.

Seeking to “capture the mundanity of daily life and make something with the feel of a short film rather than a pop promo,” Chris Hopewell used astonishingly detailed sets and models to produce this animated depiction of the everyday routine of a family of mice living behind a radiator, which includes eating meals, working in the garden and playing the violin. Recalling both Art Spiegelman and Jan Svankmejer, the video works with the Knife’s soaring electro ballad to evoke a sense of ominous beauty.

A band of Vikings on the high seas struggles to maintain its honor when challenged by a mysterious rival ship in this hilarious animated video whose style is inspired by midcentury comics and animation. Instead of grabbing swords or catapults, however, the warriors use rock riffs as their weapon of choice, and when the ships transform into giant mechanical guitarist, it’s clear that only one crew will survive.

WE SHARE OUR MOTHER'S HEALTH: THE KNIFE
USA | 3:30 | 2006
DIRECTOR: MOTOMICHI NAKAMURA
RECORD LABEL: RABID/MUTE
Japanese-born, Brooklyn-based animator Motomichi Nakamura reportedly sought to find creative ways of expressing pain in this video full of slicing scissors and surgical tools, using vaguely Soviet-inspired graphical sensibility marked by rudimentary iconography and a red-white-and-black palette to provide a counterpoint to the Knife’s bouncy gothic electro-rock.
The band recently released a videogame done in the same style.
